Nehru on Mahatma Gandhi

-….Mahatma Gandhi has already become a legend not only in India but in the world. That perhaps was inevitable. And yet this has its drawbacks, for in thinking of him as a legendary figure, he becomes someone whom we can distinctly admire and pay homage to, but who need not influence our lives very much. To feel that way is to be untrue to him. He was a man who had perhaps directly influenced more human beings than anyone else, His achievements are tremendous. But the biggest achievement of all was the way he influenced these people and made them better than they were.
(Jawaharlal Nehru. 22 May 1953)
